The story of the Order of the Royal Eagle (Ordo Aquilae Regis) group began with excitement. The excitement of two friends over mediaeval weapons, particularly over all kinds of swords (Viking swords, Scottish claymores, single-handed swords) and their potential as excellent attack and defence weapons.
This excitement led the founding members, i.e. two knights and one lady, to familiarise themselves with the 'modern' Slovenian mediaeval scene, take up hand-and-a-half swords, and eventually realise that this was what they truly wanted. After participating in another mediaeval group for several years, in which they honed their basic swordfighting skills and took part in mediaeval events, they discovered that they wished to gain even more knowledge and, above all, realise their ideas in their own way. Thus the idea of their own group was born. In 2008, they decided to act as an independent group and assumed the name Order of the Royal Eagle. Its coat-of-arms consists of a black crowned eagle, holding a sword in its talons. The crowned eagle, as a noble animal, soaring to great heights, symbolises knighthood and the lifestyle of the highest social classes, which members of the group wish to demonstrate. Soon afterwards the group was enriched by new members. On 27 March 2014, the society was officially registered under the name Order of the Royal Eagle Mediaeval Society.
We are a group of mediaeval enthusiasts, who enjoy studying and practising mediaeval swordfighting skills, making equipment, sewing clothes, embroidering, and the Middle Ages in general. Recreating the spirit of the Middle Ages gives us great joy and relaxation, a chance to socialise with friends and make new acquaintances, as well as gain new knowledge and experience, which is why we take part in mediaeval events all over Slovenia. In order to demonstrate the mediaeval way of life in our performances we have our own mediaeval tent; knights demonstrate duels between swordsmen to the visitors, while the ladies demonstrate the skill of embroidery. We have performed at many events all over Slovenia, for example in Ljubljana, Celje, Kamnik, Žužemberk, Sevnica, at Grad Castle, Vurberk, Lemberg, and in Croatia at the Sv. Helena International Knights' Tournament and at the Knights' Tournament in Koprivnica.
Swordfighting training takes place all year round, mostly outdoors; in winter it is held in a gym. We train using Johannes Liechtenauer's swordfighting system with hand-and-a-half swords. We also train how to fight with single-handed swords and shields. During training we use protective gear (gambesons, gloves); we also train wearing chain mail and parts of armour, so that we can get used to the weight and restricted movement. We sew our own items of clothing (tunics, ladies' dresses and capes) and make leather items (belts, sheaths, leather guards, armour and pieces of armour).
